CATRINA

"I ain't going against no legend, I am trying to be next in line"

This painting is of a Catrina, seen during Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. Her glance is piercing and her  appearance ornate. As a first generation Mexican American, I paint Mexican icons, cultural and historical imagery through a contemporary lens. I want to re-introduce these characters to my audience as centerpieces in the narratives I create on canvas. They are contemporary heroes and totems to the pride I feel as a Mexican American navigating the American landscape. They are emotionally layered, proud, intense and celebratory.
