GIOVANNI MORALES
Artist Statement
In my artistic practice, I utilize vintage typography and images sourced from old comic books, pulp fiction materials and movies, infusing them with layers of acrylic and spray paint to create composition on wood and canvas. Often the wood is cut into unique shapes and that enhance the story. Stencils are applied, painted, sanded to remove some of the image, then applied and painted again.
Central to my process is the creation of many different hand-cut stencils. Before the paint even hits the canvas hours are spent meticulously cutting stencils. The juxtaposition of vintage typography and iconic characters with modern mediums allows me to explore the birth of cool, pulp fiction, and romantic drama.
By layering these elements, I seek to evoke a sense of temporal dissonance , inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the evolution of visual culture layer after layer.
ultimately, my work is celebration of the layers storytelling and the enduring allure of vintage aesthetics. By repurposing and recontextualizing these elements, I aim to breathe new life into forgotten narratives and offer viewers a glimpse into bygone era, reimagined through the lens of contemporary art.
